Today my dad had shoulder surgery, something that he made me wake up at six this morning to bring him to his 7:30 check-in time. I didn’t realize I was expected to go into the building so I had worn my pajamas thinking I would be spending a few hours in the car finishing my reread of the A Court of Thorns and Roses series second and third book before driving him home. I had to sign some paperwork certifying that I would be there to pick him up and then waited in the car snuggled in a blanket in the front seat with my books until his surgery was over.
They gave me a mask to replace my personal one that they wanted me to wear and I did but for whatever reason, there was a chemical smell on the inside of their disposable masks that made me incredibly queasy and light-headed, and about five minutes into wearing it I had to sit down or I knew I would faint, something I haven’t done in years.
When I went back out to the car to pull it around so they could wheel him out and put him in the passenger side I realized my car battery was dead, which made absolutely no sense since I hadn’t had the car on while I waited. A woman waiting for her own patient to pick up in the car next to me overheard me mentioning that I would have to call my mom and have her pick up both of us offered to jump my car and that worked to start the battery up again. We got him in the car and I drove home after many thanks to the woman who so generously helped.
The rest of the day he spent on the couch watching TV with some weird vibrating sock things that were supposed to prevent blood clots and I finished rereading A Court of Wings and Ruin, I cried just as much the second time around.
